tank mates with florida gar?

Pretty much anything too big for it to eat, but you'll need a larger aquarium. Try to avoid shiny, shimmering, silver fish though, gars tend to attack them although I've seen them kept with large silver arowanas and payaras fine. Also stay away from plecos as they will suck the slime coat off of the gar.

How is this even possible? I've kept tons of plecos with my gars. What, the pleco is going to swim up and attach itself to the gar, and the gar is just going to stand there and hang out while its coat is scraped off? Seriously unlikely.

It sort of blows my mind that this could be a real issue, but people seem worried about it.

It's a well known issue that can happen when the gar is resting on the bottom. Something that is a known issue with other fish as well like polys, rays, etc.

I wouldn't have commented it if I didn't know that it has happened and is a well known issue. Gars are very easy going fish and slow moving when not startled, giving a pleco the perfect oppertunity to attatch itself to the gar, it most likely won't be there long as the gar would most likely get annoying and thrash until the pleco let go, but even the few moments the pleco did attatch itself to the gar could be fatal.

i keep spiney eels with my gar, and a clown knife. on occasion the eels get nipped but they are pretty sturdy fish once settled in. my cuban likes to steal worms from my big eel, which has resulted in my eel getting bit in the face on occasion. but he also steals from the gars. No fear in the tank. just the occasional tussle. Ive found keeping non-territorial species works best.
