I know tank mates are usually not a good idea at all with most Channa, but I’m struggling with brown algae at the moment and a couple bristlenosed plecs would help combat and prevent this, I know Channa don’t like water changes that often either so I’m in a bit of a bad situation, there are plenty of plants and hiding places etc within the tank, what do you guys think? Too risky?

Always a risk with any tankmates. How about adjust light and feedings? Or scrubbing and adding a skimmer and/or uv light.

All food given is consumed if not it is removed, I have adjusted the lighting, used phosphate remover within the filter media, Will a Uv light help considerably?

The bristle nose idea would help a lot and keep most of what’s left at bay for sure, just wondering if anyone else has successfully kept them with Channa and not had problems, I’m getting mixed comments on the matter, I have always kept my Channa tanks species only but never battled brown algae like this.

A uv will help. Not to the degree of clearing but it’s something of a trial. Skinner and scrubber may help. Water changes and scrubbing will really help but if the Channa gets too stressed then gotta deal with it.

Channa will be Channa. Can try ancistrus and see what happens. Be prepared to separate in case it goes bad.

Or be prepared to find your channa floating with a plec stuck in its mouth. :(

I’ve decided against it as it’s jut not worth loosing either fish for the sake of some minor algae which I have under much more control now
