tank of dead fish & critters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bistleworms, hydroids, snails, anemones, etc are all common hitchhikers. Some are good, harmless, or bad. Just depends.

No don't return the rock. I used to love getting a small peice of coral attached to a rock that was carrying "extras". I was keeping a reef tank so I welcomed any extras, except the ocassional bristleworm.

With that said if you are keeping a fish only sw tank you might not want some of the bonus items that get attached to the rock. Some people recommend putting the rock into a bucket of SW and some cirulation, no light and letting all the live stuff on the rocks die off before putting the rock into the tank and letting all the beneficial bacteria and critter regrow. I only did this once, the first time I tried a SW tank. I don't think it's neccesary, especially with any tank that is not fish only.

If you can keep the kids from buying another fish for at least a week or two, I would try to do that. You could buy 1 cheapy like a damsel maybe a couple hermits and snails and see how they do. If they survive a week or 2 then move forward with more fish.

SW can be a very expensive, time consuming but rewarding hobby. IME with several reef and fish only tanks in the past 10 years I think you should try to start slowly with any new tank.

Good luck!

thanks,
although they HATE to wait, after reading the answers and ideas from this forum they are going to wait a little while, then try one or two little guys.

I'd wait at LEAST two weeks of having the 55 gallon just running and settling in. Then run your water chemistry and see what your numbers are.

I've heard stirring up sand, especially a deep one and moving live rock can mix up some nasty stuff. That might be the cause of death

It also damages the bio filtration that is established within the sand bed.

had no idea, duh! , makes lots of sense once you think about it.

a hermit carb was found alive in the bottom of the 37 when they torn it down late last night. Not knowing what to do as we have no other saltwater set ups, we put it into the new tank and crossed our fingers. So far so good as of this am.
They are going to do daily water check and still going to wait a couple weeks before adding anything else.

Keep an on it and as said slow and steady will win. As for the amquel I doubt that it was the problem... I ve accidently overdosed with it before -_- and nothing happened. As for liquid bacteria.. I am iffy with that stuff. Hope it works out in the end. I would agree with letting it sit for at least 2 weeks.
