Yes, it is. Also-you should be syphoning through the gravel with every water change. Otherwise all the uneaten food and waste just sits down in the gravel and rots.
Found the problem: the pleco was hoarding moldy algae wafers and an old not-so-dehydrated-any-more shrimp
