I am starting this thread as a space for observations on a new product, the Tank Planters aquarium plant system. Tank Planters are not an entirely novel idea, but rather a proposed improvement on a plant care method that has been around for a long time--the management of aquarium plants in containers holding nutrient-rich substrates.

The Tank Planter design includes, among other features, a planter cup that closes shut with a threaded bottom covering.

There are a number of situations where aquarium hobbyists might find these things to be useful, including the following:

  • bare-bottom tanks
  • boisterous fish (especially cichlids) that might uproot plants
  • low-tech setups
  • goldfish tanks
  • indoor ponds
  • plants that can grow to a large size (e.g. Echinodorus) or rapidly spread (e.g. Vallisneria)

It took me all night, but I just finished formatting a tri-fold instruction sheet to go with the first product in the Tank Planter line, the Mini Garden Combination Package. I uploaded the pdf and here is the link...

Howdy,

Very interesting. Please feel free to post more details and updates. The little pots almost remind me of Bonsai. I am sure a mature Echinodorus will not reach it's full size in such a container. Good for small tanks.

Love the idea... but is it possible to make the containers dissolvable over a few months? I really like the idea (love, really), but in the long run I'm afraid it would choke the roots.

That is an interesting idea, but I think that a biodegradable pot would defeat the purpose of the planter as something that would contain the plant roots.

The roots do eventually become crowded in the planter, but you can consider that as a way to control the size of plants that grow very large, such as Amazon sword.

That planter in the picture there is only about 2.5" across. There will be larger models pretty soon.

I haven't been back to this thread in a while. I have a new little setup going in a 10-gallon with swords and crypts all planted in Tank Planters.

I'm using one of those new Pierce CO2 systems.

I got some better pictures of my 50-gallon riparium the other day and here is a quick FTS. All of the underwater plants are in Tank planters, which is handy because I used a coarse-grained, light-colored gravel to get the right look for the tank. I think that these swords and crypts would not have grown ver well if planted right into that gravel.

I bought a bunch of your suction cup design planters and I love them! I'm very interested in your submersible tank planters! All my plants are above the surface of the water. Had to raise the light some to make room. I should throw a pic up to show you. I will need about 6 of those planters with plant food and recommendations on plants :D I don't have and most likely will never have a CO2 set up. So recommend accordingly.
