I have a 20 gallon Long tank.
one 3 inch JD
a couple of 1.5 inch mosquito fish

bare bottom
caves
pvc pipe
sponge filter

The JD will eventually move
Any idea for a cool permanent resident?
or potential grow-out buddy?

I am leaning towards an oscar, because the JD is a bit skittish, and I feel that the Oscar being such a personable fish (as a thread recently posted), it might be cool to have it around. Would they be compatible?

Thanks

at 3" the tank is too small to add another cichlid, also consider aggression from the dempsey, not a good idea until you move it to a bigger tank

An oscar is not a permanent resident for a 20 gallon. You are aware of how large they get?

Jd and oscar would work in bigger tank, usually. Wouldn't add one in that 20 though. Lots of cool perm res that could live in there: rainbow cichlids, firemouth, cons of various kinds, etc...

firemouths get 8"+ tooo

but yeah dwarves, rams, apistos, some smaller acaras would work for life

Your thinking too simple!!! go apistos all the way!!!

Yo my Monster Bay bro, YO.....Never put 20g and Oscar in the same paragraph.....What type of tank are you planning to uprgrade too?One Oscar will thrive in a 75g, ALONE....If the JD must be with your O, I'd get a 100g for the two....Stick two giant clay, flower pos on each side of the tank.....Fill the center with large driftwood and rocks to cut their eyesite from each other....PLacing some large fake plants to also block their view from each other would be cool....Normally though, if these two cichlid species are grown together from baby(1-3inch) they will be ok for life.....But ake precaution with teritory if the tank is less than 100g....Good luck and post pix.......

for sure, import. thanks.

i am aware of how large oscars get. around 12-14 inches, right?

i was using this as a grow out, and am humbly learning that 20 gallons is not enough, even for a grow out (thank you, cichlaholic).

Once my JD grows out, I suppose I will try with convicts. Would a 20L be okay for a potentially breeding pair of convicts (for life)--as oscar crazy mentioned?

Thanks MFKers :)
I am always humbled by your knowledge and inspired by your care for fish.

don't count on a firemouth getting that size, even a specimen a couple of years old is pushing about half of that

the prblem with using as a grow out is that u need to know when the size f the fish growing out has reached a healthy maximum. If a fish grows to 12" per se, that dosnt mean u leave it in the 20g until its 9". If u have a 3" jd i woud say ur near the point of already needing upgrade. If u wait to long to upgrade u might get into stunting chances. I would upgarde the jd already and skip tank mats and then just do something cool with the 20l:)
