the prblem with using as a grow out is that u need to know when the size f the fish growing out has reached a healthy maximum. If a fish grows to 12" per se, that dosnt mean u leave it in the 20g until its 9". If u have a 3" jd i woud say ur near the point of already needing upgrade. If u wait to long to upgrade u might get into stunting chances. I would upgarde the jd already and skip tank mats and then just do something cool with the 20l:)

Thanks. good advice.
Would a breeding pair of convicts be alright for my tank?

Upgrade the JD to a new tank and get a pair of convicts for the 20 long. That's a perfect tank for them and they are awesome very active fish/ They are a blast to watch so they would be perfect permenent residents. You could also go with a pair of Bolivian Rams in a 20 long although I like the convict more personaly. I wouldn't add anything though until you get the JD into a 55 gallon or larger and I would do that right away. If you go with a 125 gallon tank or larger you might be able to get away with a JD and an Oscar but the Oscar would have to be a lot larger than the JD or it would be terrorized and eventually killed. JD's are pretty nasty fish. It is also pretty hard to find a 6" Oscar at an LFS that is housed with other fish and in my personal experience once an Oscar has been on it's own for a month or two it's just too late. Even Oscars that have been housed with other fish often times won't tolerate new companions once they have reach the size you would need yours to be. Hope that helps. Please go with the Convicts in your 20 though. You won't be dissapointed.
