Tank Problems

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mr Pleco,

welcome to MFK! Where in KS are you located at? I'm in Overland Park. Glad to read that your tank is stabilizing. Just a quick question regarding your pic: Are these silver dollars, and are these live plants?????

Yeah 5 silver dollars, 3 are red hooks, 1 a big bull, and one is from petsmart. No live plants for me, tried and did not work. When you have a Green Severum that eats any kind of plant I put in and then 3 plecos plants go fast. I just moved to Overland Park off Metcalf. Also I don't know if you know these fish stores, But waldos on Wornall is great, Overland Park Pets on 95th and Quivera sadly just closed.

All,
I wanted to clear up an important point. It's a myth that carbon will leach chemicals back into your tank. Only under very acidic conditions will this happen (pH< 4). If your tank has the conditions necessary for de-adsorbtion of carbon, you have bigger problems to deal with than the carbon.

I had seen alot of situations like this at PetSmart.. and I started to notice that more often than not Ammonia remover chips were involved. I think they actually stop the beneficial bacteria from getting Ammonia, and it kills it off.. After the Zeolite has become exhausted, the bacterial bloom begins again.

I am anti-carbon, anti-zeolite, all the way!! Pre-Filter + Biomedia..!
