Ok... Do we know the dimensions and the glass thickness?... I LOVE how everyone just assumes that they know the answers without asking the obvious questions first

Exactly my thought!

I meant no top brace... I just calculated the hydrostatic force on the large side panel using a program I wrote and it was approximately 188 pounds. I actually will be keeping the hole in the bottom because I want to put in a piece of pvc pipe going up to the water surface so I can hook up a wet/dry underneath.

That force, while relevant, is small because it is equally distributed over a large area. I've NEVER owned a 40 gallon with a center brace. If you still have any doubts go look at a new 40 at a LFS for comparison. Keeping the whole in the bottom is fine if you can make use of it.

3/16" is fine! Just clean it out very well, clean around the whole in the bottom with alcohol, and silicone a piece of glass over the whole. Fill it with water outside to test for leaks after waiting for the silicone to dry for about a week. You should be fine!!

Just want to make sure you know it is not tempered glass and that the trim around the top only goes 3/4 the way around it because on the 4th side is where a screen top slid over it. Would I need to add a center brace on the top? The sides do not seem as sturdy as they should be. I just want to make sure is ok, as I do not need a water mess on the second floor.....

A 40 gallon breeder I had a year ago had a center brace....

The plastic trim, even on an aquarium is mainly for looks. It gives very little strength. you shouldn't need a center brace. 40's don't come with center braces. The glass on that tank is not tempered. Tempered glass is not drillable!! Put a fitting in the hole, set the tank up on some wood blocks so the tank is evenly supported and sits flat, fill it with water and let it sit OUTSIDE for a day or 2 to check for leaks. I would always do a fill test OUTSIDE on ANY used tank!

I just put a bulk head in the bottom and plugged it up. Took the tank outside and filled it up to the top. At the middle it is between a quarter and half inch wider. I think it is going to need a center brace.
easy enough...put a strap of glass in the top and silicone it in place...
