In my opinion i would make him buy you a new one.

His friend can not work, I'm sure he gets some kind of medical pay but I'm sure he has things to pay himself like all of us do. Should he pay...yes. Realistically, it might be months for this to happen.

When there is a will there is a way. I'm 16 if i really needed a 80 gallon tank that bad, lets see
1. beg parents
2. loan from parents
3. ask for early b-day/x-mas present?
4. buy of craigslist they are dirt cheap
5. sell electronics
6. sell anything worth money i don't need.
7. DIY pond.
just a few on the top of my head

In Canada someone cannot sue for medical bills because we have universal health care. And there is a limit for a lawsuit for pain and suffering. So if he sued me it would be useless. Also I am not spoiled. Everything I own I have worked for, or was gift from various family members. I bought all my tanks and fish. I bought and built my main computer. My laptop and PS3's were gifts from three different people, none of which were my parents. I had a job but the store I worked for closed and I am looking for another job now.

Does Canadian Health Care also cover Pain and Suffering and Endangerment of a Minor? Think outside the box kid....

I think you got off lucky. Get a new tank, and BUY a commercial stand.

EDIT* Did a quick google search, there is a limit for Pain and Suffering, but it's into the ten to hundreds of thousands. Strike 2!!!

ALSO, Hilarious when you say, "Also I am not spoiled. Everything I own I have worked for, or was gift from various family members"

yes, we have universal health care.

but that doesn't mean you can't sue someone if you are hurt on their property.

all a lawyer would have to do is to prove the tank was unstable and you (actually your parents) could be sue for neglegence causing pain and suffering.

but luckily this did not happen.

I may be dishing out a bit of common sense here, surely if you can afford to buy a rather large rubbermaid tub, I am assuming you are going to be looking for one at least 4ft long, then you could afford to look on the Canadian version of craigslist/local ads for tanks. That way you might even get your larger tank + stand you stated that you would like earlier for less or equal than the rubbermaid. No point paying twice.
Just an idea.

I keep an eye on kijiji constantly for tanks and such but never have much luck. I got a big rubbermaid tub for 20 bucks and my oscar and FH are in there now.

Nice, better than nothing. I hope it wasn't one of those cheap "walmart" type of tubs. They will bow like hell in a few days.
