i had a tank that started to re-cycle (i think) after too many water changes in a short time ...
anyhow, now it is showing a Nitrite level of about 0.5-1.0

is this tank safe for fish ??

is there any way i can get it back down to zero quickly?? add bacteria ??

large water changes would not cause a tank to "re-cycle".

The only thing that would do that is if you replaced filter media. Or rinsed out too much filter media at once.
Unfortunately, if the reason for the spike is less bacteria and not too much, then the only thing you can do is continue to do water changes to keep the nitrite down as much as possible until the filters can re-establish themselves with the necessary bacteria.

Just keep on doing water changes every day or every other day to keep the nitrites down and make sure you are using dechlorinator.

and make sure not to mess with the filters for a while.

are there fish in this tank now? if so, go ahead with what i said above still

bump ... other opinions ???
i have moved most of my fish out, but i need to be able to use the tank again ASAP

What's the ammonia & nitrAte levels?

Large W/C's can cause filter problems as you are removing the nutrients that the filter needs to exist. keep enough fish in it to feed the filter and watch the chemistry carefully so the ammonia/ nitItes don't get to high, when they do, do a small w/c to bring them back down.

Do you have another filter you can take some bio-material out of and put in this filter?

If you can get good BioSpira (refrigerated) that could help.

Dr Joe

.

Dr. Joe beat me to it.. i was gonna suggest Bio-Spira too.. it's made by Marineland.

Most good LFS carry it, but call ahead and make sure. it MUST be refrigerated and you MUST keep it cold on the way home or you're going to waste a lot of money.

thanks, i thought that w/c COULD screw me up....

ammonia is maybe .5-.75
nitrATE just under 10
heres what i have done so far, tell me if i messd up already ...
i added some API bacteria (not biospira), and i set up another filter on the tank (so 60g worth on a 29) with new and seeded media
and also added 10-20 small rosies, mainly to feed the 2 pickerel that are in the tank

i will call the store near me that USED TO carry biospira ... i think they said they couldnt get it anymore ... if so, should i get 29g worth, or more than that ?
how quickly will that get the tank back under control ?

i honestly am not familiar with the API bacteria product.. i know and trust Marineland products and they have always worked for me.

IF i were you, i would call around, see if you can find an LFS that sells Bio-Spira.. it's expensive, but it's definitely worth it.

adding a filter with established media from another tank would give you similar results if you have another tank. But if it's out of the water for more than a few minutes again, you're just treading water and not accomplishing anything at all.

At least in that situation you wouldn't be wasting $30 for a tube of Bio-Spira that you didn't keep cold until you used it.. lol.

when i set up a new tank, i take one of the foam filters from another tank, and a new foam filter in the new tank, and i replace the foam filter in the other tank with a new one (i run 2 Hydro V foam filters on all of my tanks over 40 gallons). And.. i add one large tube (the one that says it's for treating up to 90 gallons) of Bio-Spira. Then i put in a hand full of small fish, something that i don't care if it gets eaten when the tank's permanent residents arrive, like guppies, or mollies or at the moment.. red jewels. And in 48 hours i test the water.. i expect to see little or no ammonia, no nitrites and less than 10 PPM nitrates.. then i check the PH and adjust as necessary.. i add aquarium salt or driftwood to bring it down and i add baking soda to bring it up. and i aim for 7.0 - 7.6 PH. for my SA cichlids, and 8.0+ for my son's africans.

THEN, i put in the fish that are going to live there permanently.. or until they need a bigger tank.

did that help?
