I had a nitrite spike of over 1.0mg/L.
First of all to answer your question about it hurting your fish, yes, it will kill them. It turns haemaglobin of methaemaglobin which does not have O2 carrying capacity, also known as brown blood.
I fixed it in 4 hours buy doing a 75% water change, added prime at 4 times normal strength to detoxify the nitrite, added nitrivec. After the first two steps it was at 0.3mg/L, 3 hours after nitrivec it was 0 and hasn't changed. Saved my lung fish and since then I have been testing the water every 4-6 hours, will probably stop that after a week.
