Tank size for a longnose gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1-3 inches is about the average growth rate(per month of the growth season) for fl/spot i belive
long nose get slightly bigger so i would guess the same numbers if not better
mine has slowed for this growth season :(
was putting down 2-3 inches per month

my longnose is almost at the 18" mark. i got him on december 21, 07 (i remember this cuz it was the day after my birthday that i got him). if im not mistaken they average out at around 18-19" in there first year. give or take a few inches. a mature longnose will average out at around 36". again give or take a few inches. any gar on a proper diet will have amazing growth rates. (example: my fiance caught a juvi longnose while dipnetting, and it was about 2", about 4 to 5 months later he was between 7 and 9 ")
meaning that your fish will probably out grow a silver aro since its only at the 7" mark. as far as tankmates, go with fish that arent to aggressive but big enough to where it cant be eaten. my 2 favorites are other gars (except a gator gar), and bichirs. try to stay away from catfish. if im not mistaken they have a growth rate similar to that of gars. meaning that they grow fast as well. and will pick on your gar if not try to eat him if big enough. the aro will more than likely work as long as you have 1 or 3 of them i have heard that having only 2 aros they will fight. and im not sure about stingrays. since they are illegal in Ga. i have never kept them.

hope this helps.

ya that helps, but i know im not going to beable to house my guy for life, im going to have to get the tank, then im going to try and get them at the same size, maybe the gar a little bigger. Im talking about in the future, my bad

u can house him 4 life u just need to get a bigger tank 4 him

ya thats what im going to do, but by the time i will be able to get the tank, i think he will have outgrown his current tank. O ya, the tank is going to consist of:

2 longnoses
1 silver aro
And then either 1-2 stingrays, if i can convince my parents, or about 4-5 birchirs, prolly ornate with endli or something like that. And also maybe 1 clownknife fish.

sounds good. i would go with 6x4 with the tank just to make sure the gar has room to turn. cuz you never know if your gar is gonna reach 3 ft. or not but if he does and your tank is only 3 ft. wide then when your gar goes to turn there isnt going to be enough room. his head and tail will rub up against the walls of the tank and will lead to stress for the fish. as for the clown knife it should work. just provide lots of hides for the CK.

how big is his current tank??

right now he is in a 75g, and he is about 6-7".

And i changed from polys and rays, to some clown knifes, and added some more gars, but f/s, and a few more aros

So stock will be:

3 silver aros
2 longnose
2 f/s
3 clown knifes

too much?

i would go with only one clown knife and some polys.
