The original plan was to buy two GTs and grow them out in a 55 Gallon, then pick one to keep and give the other one away. Well, they're about 2 inches right now and it turns out that I have a Male and a Female. They spawned and now I have free swimming fry (I'm really excited). So now I hate to give up this proven pair as I have kept the fry with the parents and both the male and the female are great parents. I would hate to break them up so now I'm looking at finding a bigger tank for them both.

Since they are slow growers I figure I have some time to look for some great Craigslist deals but I have no idea what would be a good tank size to look for. Obviously bigger is always better, but bigger is always more $$$ so I want to get something that will be good for them without breaking the bank.

Also, for the size of tank recommended, what's a good price to look for? (I don't want to overpay)

If I am not mistaken a 55 or a 75 would do just fine... but I have no experience with GT's and this just from reading around...

Well, from my understanding (and I could be completely wrong) is that a pair of JD's in a 55 Gallon would be fine because the male JD tops out around 10" whereas a GT can get up to 12" - although getting that size is not often seen and they get more so the size of a male JD.

So if the above is true then I could see a pair of GTs in a 55 Gallon and I know that with the SA/CA fish the aggression levels vary fish by fish. But again, I'm only a year and a half into the hobby so I'm unsure.

I have a pair of GTs in a 55 and have had no problems so far. the male is 6" and the female 4". I would however go for a larger tank if your funds permit...thats my plan also.

good luck with the fry. mine have spawned 3 times but the fry never make it to free swimmers.

Yeah I often hear about the male eating them and on other occasions the female eating them. But both the male and the female now are escorting the fry around the tank - it's pretty cool and I definitely want to keep them together.

thats awesome. I've heard the same ablout the parents eating the fry.

This is about right although bigger the better. I wouldn't get anything more than the pair except maybe some dithers (silver dollars work good).
