(Sorry if this is a duplicate, but my original post never showed up)

What size of tank would you all suggest for a large Jack Dempsey and would you only put one fish in it or would you put in a pair?

This is my first large fish and I don't know the requirements for large fish (except larger tanks and more filtration, etc.

Thank you for your help and patience for a Newbie with larger fish.

Some say 55g, but I would think a 75g would give him the extra space.

Especially if later you decide to get any other fish as well... always handy to have some extra space.

i have a 11" oscar a 7" jd and a 4" jd in a 55 gallon and they do great i have a fluval 305 and two hang on 380 gph filters with a diy powerhead filter and 20% water change every two weeks ive never had a problem with this setup and ive had it for a lil over a year now but a 75 gallon would be better im restricted for size cause im in a 2nd story apt thats not supposed to have tanks anyway.........i risk eviction for my fish lol

In my experience, the more room you give a fish, the better off they are...they seem to relax more. 75 min. if you can go bigger, then more power to ya.

55 gallons would be fine for one. depending on the personalities of the fish a 55 could be ok for a pair.

I had my JD in a 55 for a while, he was rescued from a guy who had him and a huge convict together in a 30. we moved him to a 75 when we moved to our apartment, and he was happy as a clam in that tank. Though now that he's made the big move to the 150, he is really showing his personality. He usually is calm unless his massivore can is in sight, to which he madly thrashes around lol. He's been housed with smaller fish too. But he has never messed with anyone. His tankmates are my colony of fronts and my assorted severums, and a few BN plecs and some rainbow cichlid babies. Him and a huge green severum and a mutual hate for each other but even they get along better in the 150. Can't wait to see pics :)
