I was wondering what the recommended tank size would be for a Zebra Mantis Shrimp. And would a tall style tank be preferred due to the height of sand needed? One last thing, are pockets of low oxygen air a problem in the deep sand?
Thanks for any help you can offer!

You want to try to have about as deep sand as the shrimp is long, so a big Zebra needs 12" of sand. For oxygenation, you can go with a bunch of sand sifters, like cerith and nassarius snails. Or put an undergravel filter plate with a tube sticking out to get some water flow.

The spearing types are more of a fish eater. Mine never bothered snails or starfish.

is live rock necessary?
no but i recommend atleast a little chunk to import bacteria necessary to the nitrogen cycle.

giv him both!

zebra mantis shrimp love nice LR cave's and will eat your cerith's and nassirus at least mine did until I added a sand sifting starfish and pencil urchin's for algae control but I think you'll be fine with snail's just give lot's of Live Rock and mix the shrimp's diet or he'll be mad at you and not color up as nice as they can.
