Are they? I too would be interested to know if they settle down a bit in a JohnPTC-sized tank with other large (and larger) fish. Obviously in the wild they don't kill every other arowana they see (would make breeding fairly difficult!) so there has to be a point somewhere where they have enough space to mellow out a bit.

Anyone seen any in large public aquarium displays?
Hao posted a picture with a load of jars in a public aquarium in japan or something.

they have atleast one in a big display at the shedd in chicago. when i go there this year i will try to get some pics. i remember one for sure attacking an aul that was way bigger then it. there may have been more then one in the tank as there were a few aul's but i can't remember.

Denver's Downtown Aquarium had a couple (pics are from Jan. '07) in with some asians, barramundi, clown knives, dats, rays and others. Tank is 2x what you see in the first pic. Don't really have a good pic of the jardini

Jars are aggressive no matter what the tank size. A 2000 gallon tank will be pretty pricey. But if i had the money for a tank of 1-2 thousand gallons i would be looking into other fish instead of an aro.
if i have a 2000 gallon tank i want one of the fish in there to be an aro i would do an asian but if still illegal then i would most likely do a jar

i don't have a 2000gal yet i am starting to get ready for one though gonna be a ten year process but along the way might decide to get bigger. it is a bucket list item for me.

A 300-400 gal is just the right size for a silver or a black so that won't stop fights

If you have a 1000-2000 gal with just 2 aro then it will just mean they stay in each corner and come in the middle to fight

The only way to make it work is to get the 1000-2000 gal and get more than 5 but start them off in a small tank 1st but the 1000 gal is the tank you will need in the end
