Tank Size - would this work?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok, so i am trying to put in some serious planning for the now finalized new tank to be in september! so happy......

again, it will be 4ft x 3ft x 2ft

revised stock plan:

2 - silver aros
1 - jar/lei
4 - dats
2 - pbass

some points to address:

- jar/lei : after doing some further research, i think the tank can house it for life (given average max length seems to be around the 24-26" mark)
- silvers : i think the width will allow me to keep them till around 24/28" mark --- and dependent on stocking level of the tank at that time - keep or sell
- dats : slow growing - by the time they need bigger, i'll have bigger
- pbass : ill go with one of the smaller type and the 3ft width should give me plenty of time for these guys to get big

what do you think?

i have been talking to some of the local fish keepers here in china that i have come in contact with - they seem to think my tank can house even more fish.....although i won't be taking that advice - i am confident i can raise healthy fish until either a 240 or 300gal comes into my possession...

To tell you the truth I think you have to be joking.

honestly, i know to some (or many) - this may sound a tad crazy....

i should note that in the 1-2 yr range, a larger tank will be in the pic...at which time, the silvers will probably move out, along with the dats, leaving the pbass and lei/jar....

but for the first 1-1.5 years, i ACTUALLY believe this setup can work....

beginning size of fish:

silvers: 8-10"
jar/lei: 4-6"
dats: 3-5"
pbass: 4-5"

have you been reading other peoples comments?? silvers will grow 2" per month so they will very soon outgrow that tank. 2 will be even worse as they will fight... why do you ask our oponions if you dont do anything with them?

haha, you funny guys....

of course i "do things" with your opinions....i digest them, judge them, and will eventually test them....that is the point of a forum - it is not just to accept what people say, but to put things to the test, develop your own experiences, and share what has worked/not worked....

in my case - i will be putting a mix together - and to some peoples surprise, it may end up working....

i understand the growth rate of silvers - but know that although 2" a month can and does happen - there aren't many silvers here that are at the 3ft mark at 1.5 years.....

trust me, the opinion of those on this forum are VALUABLE to me...especially with the little experience i have in raising fish - perhaps being in china, and seeing some very "non-western" approaches to keeping fish has perhaps open my eyes to the possibilities of alternative methods of fish keeping....

i appreciate all the input - and will not ignore it come stocking time....

i should note - i am not the kind of guy who will tolerate fish fighting all the time, nipped fins, scarring, deformities due to living conditions and overall poor health/stress levels - so although the stocking plan may begin a certain way - the second i notice things that are bad for the fish - i will adjust

dont ask for our opinions, if u dont really wanna hear them, then call us funny..

i have 3 aros in my 400gal 8x2.5x2.5 tank, there all silvers and even that i think will be more then enough crowded. i can't even imagine 2 silvers in a 4ft tank, maybe 1 for a long long while. but 2?

then u wanna add a leichardti/jardini who both dont tank well to aro tankmates. i can say go ahead n try it, you'll either get rid of the 2 silvers or the leichardti within a few months.

dats grow slow, u should be fine with those.

pbass u should also be okay with.

i'd go with 1 silver aro, or 1 leichardti, or 1 jardini. 4 dats, 2 pbass...

trust me. i have my leichardti in a 6ft tank and it already seems to small for it and its only about 8". i actually wanna move it to my 400gal when its like 14" to see if it gets along with my silvers.

edit: wait a minute, your from china. do as you please, were used to seeing over crowded tanks from your country. and you were complaining about the other guy growing silvers in 20gal tanks. your doing no better with ur ideas of stocking

wow, amazing the kind of response you get when you try to communicate a logical explanation.......

i have learned one thing though - i am going to post WAY less (in the form of thread making and asking questions) - and simply observe what others do.....

you are right! there is loads of info on this site - which i have spent many hours sifting through to help me in my preparations.....

new and seasoned hobbyists all make "mistakes" -

i am hoping to minimize mistakes by learning from people on this forum - and appreciate all the help i have received so far.....

a final note on the future tank:

it is a "grow out" tank - meaning that the inhabitants, or at least some of them, are only there for a temporary amount of time - in accordance to the advice i am NOT ignoring.....

why i believe a silver / jar or lei combo could work? cuz all fish are different and all fish keepers are different

thanks for the great advice

hahahaha.....

and by the way....ethnics - just browsed through some of your history on MFK.....

nuff said.....

i am not into "flaming" or using a forum to act like someone i am not - so i will refrain from trying to defend myself in a digital world where lies run rampant, and truth is far from reality....
