Check around, check the classifieds and the LFS near you. I got my 125 complete set up for around $600 with stand, lights, hood, and 200 lbs. of gravel because they guy really wanted to get it out of his inventory.

When it comes to compatibility, alot depends on the personalities of the fish involved. No one can say for sure if it will or will not work. We have a JD, currently about 4-5 inches long, and he is a wimp, he even hides at feeding time. But, I have heard many say how aggressive their JD's are. At the same time, he has an Oscar that is about 5inches as a tank mate, and he pesters everyone in the tank.
In short, I think alot of this is trial and error when it comes to stocking aquariums.
