maybe it's her?

yeah carbon will help or maybe gravel vac. ever considered a protien skimmer?

I agree ^^

Carbon helps, but those who aren't aquarists will be more sensitive to the organic 'earthy' smell that a healthy fish tank has.

I imagine the only way you don't get that smell is if you have a 24hr drip system? I'm not sure on that though.

It could be algea that she smells and not exactly the fishy water smell do u have excessive algea growth because it can make a unpleasent odor when exposed to air like when u do a water change but i agree with the others carbon will help.

algae can have a very foul oder ecspecially when out of water!

I would guess that it is your sand that is smelling so bad. Sand traps gasses and unless its moved frequently will get a bad odor. Scoop out a big handful of sand and ask your wife if thats what the smell is. Good luck

He said that his substrate was sand, not gravel. I have had sand substrate before and it did get the smell quite often. I have since changed over to gravel subtrate and the smell is gone.

Sometimes when I feed my fish I accidentally drop some pellets on the inside rim of the tank and they stay moist because of the humidity in the tank. After a couple days it really stinks. This might be your problem too.

Next time tell her it could be worse! It could be that wet dog smell. Man, nothing stinks worse than wet dog!

The wife if obviously not a fish person. :banher: (from the basement that is) :grinno:

wet dog isnt that bad! if you forget to clean chicken poop and it rains a lot and gets hot and does that a lot! that smells bad! like rotting fish!:(

Last time my tank smelt i was because it had a touch of nitrite. i work in the trade and almost immune to the smell, but this one hit me lol. as the peeps on here said, change of carbon (every 2 months i say) and get rid of the nitrite (if any). but yeah peeps who don't have fish always complain a lot! we get it in the shop when the posh folk walk in. they grab there nose and say '' oooh, smells of fish in here'' (me thinking, ''yeah a fish room with many hundreds of fish would kinda smell a bit like that)
