hi everyone, just doing some research on tank specs...
the things i wanna know are;

tank dimensions,
glass thickness,
inhabitants,

basically the reason is im looking at purchasing a 7ft tank and would like to know if i can safely house my birchirs, motoro, lima cat and possibly an arowana with a thickness of 10mm?

does anybody have a tank this sort of size and this thickness? the price difference between 10 and 12mm isnt massive but it allows me to spend more money on a filter...:naughty:

any help/experiences greatly appreciated thanks

How deep front to back is the tank you are considering? I ask mainly for the motoro since footprint is so crucial for any ray. Is this going to be a DIY project or are you looking at buying premade tanks? Sorry I may be misunderstanding your original post but either way the footprint is necessary to know if it will work for rays

The actual height of the water will determine the glass thickness needed. Other than that, alexmuw said it: the thicker the better.

I have plans for a 300g that I'll be building as I have funds. Since the height will be 24", it calls for 1/2" plate (roughly 12mm) while leaving a safety factor of 3.8. In theory, I could reduce to 3/8" by bracing the ever-living heck out of it, but 300g is a lot of water to have on your floor because your fish got a bit punchy with its reflection.

length 84" height 24" width 30"

i think the footprint should work as i purchased my motoro from a local breeder and he has a 8ft 2.5ft and has 8 rays in total (not all kept in his 8ft btw) he has a holding tank in his garage roughly 6ft x 2.5ft. his water quality is second to none also as his filtration is mind blowing!

anyway back on the subject of my tank, i ran the calculation through one of the thickness calcs and 10mm has a safety factor of 2.5(classed as safe) the base will be double thickness and i can always add more bracing myself.

basically if a birchir/arowana was to take a dart at the glass, will it break and turn my living room into a paddling pool lol?

not if its half inch thick glass

despite what the urban legends say, no fish that we keep in aquariums can break through half inch thick glass.

Liz's husband could not break through it on the first swing with a sludge hammer.

no fish can. its a physical impossibility. the fish's body is too soft and water provides too much resistance to build up the necessary momentum to get through glass that thick.

now, if a fish were to somehow dig and dislodge a large rock, that might be a different story.

but you can rest easy that your fish alone cannot break 1/2" plate glass. even a big arro can't do that.

What about a ticked off pacu or a lungfish? I heard of a lungfish breaking a 200+ gallon tank. I don't know how thick the glass was, but at 200g I'd think it should be 1/2". Just rumors, though. Are those the same rumors you've heard?

ok but what about 10mm glass? i dont plan on having rocks, some largepieces of driftwood but it will have double thickness base...

the stories are all BS if the proper glass thickness was used. I had a 20" pacu for many years in the 90's.

he can hit glass hard and easily break a thinned glass heater but no way could he ever get through 1/2" glass. for a while before I sold him I had to keep him temporarily in a tank that was made with 3/8" glass. even that would be hard to imagine him busting through.
