i went down to our local petco a couple days ago just to look around while my parents went and got groceries, while walking back to the fish section i saw something that amazed me. they had an 8 1/2" oscar or tiger cichlid, and what i thought was a red belly pirahna but was a red bellied pacu that is abut 9" any who i have them in a 55 gallon tank right know while i get the money to get a bigger tank. but i really want to get another fish that is colorful and that will be able to live confertable with the oscar and pacu. if push comes to shove i wish to get some kind of arowana. never owned one but always wanted to. and i need to know what is a good tank set up?

i am open to suggestions and yes i did adopt those beautiful fish

The downside and problem with having a pacu is the amazing size they get to - and from what I hear they get to them very quickly as well.

You are looking at a mega upgrade very soon.

yea i was planning on a 200g minumum but being 14 and only making 195$ every 2 weeks it will take a while lol

Personally considering the fish can get up to 30inches, I would say that a 200g is still on the smaller side.

Obviously I understand your age and situation but I don't think that is a good fish to start off with.

With a 200g you can get plenty of other ca/sa fish that would live there happily for life.

it was an honest mistake but he was enjoying the company of the oscar so i took them both. after reasearch i realised i needed a bigger tank, i am willng to up-grade with the exception of stock growth

rbp need an enormous tank. i have 2 oscars in a 90 gal right now and am getting ready to upgrade to a 150. after 7 months they are already outgrowing the 90g so plan accordingly.

one of the things about pacu's is not just the length, they are very tall in relation to length so a 30" long pacu will be close to 24" high. meaning you'll need a tall and long tank. I think that;s whya 500g is ideal for pacu's

I just got 2 6" pacu's for my 125g and next year I'll be building a 500g tank. well it'll really depend on the glass. if I can get a nice 8' piece of glass for sub 300$ I'll go for a 750g.

but I'm not in a situation where they'll outgrow the tank and have nowhere to go. I already have a 3300g pond they could go in if necessary. and this fall it will be dug deeper to an average 5' depth from an average 3' depth (currently the deepest spot is 5')

I think every upgrade plan needs an adequate backup plan. these fish get huge and after all that's why we love them so decent accomidations are necessary.

I'd say they need to go back. They won't jump up and tell you the tank's too small. They'll start to get sick, more and more frequently, and you'll be dumping chemicals in the tank to treat them, and before long, you'll have spent so much trying to keep fish who are too large for your tank that you probably could have bought another tank! At some point, their immune systems will be so damaged that they'll die if they're not in a huge tank. You could look on craigslist, because you can usually get a 125 there for a couple of hundred bucks, and then you'll need to figure out filtration. That set-up would last you for a couple of years, at least. I totally understand where you're coming from (I've adopted some hard-luck cases, myself), but if you can't provide any better for them than the lfs was, you're not helping the fish at all.
