Tank Stocking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A third may not be enough. You'll have to test and see. My point was that back then we didnt have the same access to tests and stuff. So its fine to just do a weekly waterchange but test to see of its enough. My 125 was pretty crowed with 40 adult fish and I lost a few, mostly to aggression. Eventually they seemed to figure it out and started breeding. That was a different problem on it's own.

It should be ok for now since I only have about 14 fish in there I think but once I add the other males then I’ll do more at once or a third twice a week or something

I want to start breeding down the road but I’ll keep all the females in a seperate tank and just put a male or two in from the 125 for a while and hopefully that will work. Is it better to move the mother to the fry tank for a bit or should the eggs be removed from her mouth and put in one of those little bubbler incubators?

I have a heavily stocked African 150. I find I have to do 75% changes at least once often twice a week.

When I was keeping African cichlids in 125 gallon tanks (moderately stocked) I did a minimum of 50%, and typically more like 80%, water changes each week. I was running three AC 110's on those tanks for filtration.

If you have peacocks in the female tank you don't want to save fry from them. Once you mix juvenile or female peacocks, you can no longer ID the species so you can't sell them as any named peacock and you won't be able to sell the fry for the same reason.

If you want to spawn the haps maybe have a separate tank for 4 females and 1 male until the female is holding.

Have you tried one of the python/aqueon waterchangers? Much easier than buckets.
I have at the tank in our plumbing shop which is on well water but I have just been siphoning all of the poop out there with a garden hose for the water changes and filling it back up with the hose after I rinse the hose out. At my house I am in town water so I have to mix it with stuff to get rid of the chlorine. I did buy myself a triplex filter system for my house with a big 20” carbon filter so I can go without the seachem prime though. I may still put in a bit of that sometimes though.

I was wondering if I just had all of the females in one tank if the male that I put in at that time would only spawn with their own type.
