Tank Stripping Tool

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How well did that work for you? I bought one for my re-sealing purposes and I did my 75g with a regular razor blade but tried out the scraping tool on my 20g but I didn't like it because it didn't ever really cut into the silicone, just bounced off of it.
I haven't tried it yet but I did notice that the angled blades could use a it of a sharpening which should give them an easier glide through the silicone.

Kinda looks like that but with a wood handle. All I have is the triangle blade but those other ones look useful too. It's lost in here somewhere lol.

Your device might actually be superior cause it looks like you could pit more leverage on the seam stripping action without filleting yourself lol.

Lol, it looks like you've been burgled. I can't believe I've found somebody who collects more stuff than me! You may very well be my long lost brother, lol.

Hey jjohnwm jjohnwm , have you seen this. I believe we have a brand new MFK redneck champion, lol

thing looks cool, but unless the blade is super-sharp it might rip&tear the silicone rather than cutting it, which may pull it away from the structural hold between the panes. Food for thought(?)
To be safe, maybe razor the short-cut (the pane that is overlapped by the other pane) to clean/safe-slice the structural, then use the tool to remove the other side where you've got to be sooo annoyingly careful with the blade.

That's what it did for my attempt. Didn't have trouble with the structural silicone since I didn't give it a chance to go that deep after I saw it ripping the seals.

So giving the blades a good sharpening might actually be worth a shot! I'll be very interested to see how it goes if that's what K krichardson decides to do!

When I recently tore down my old 180g i used a craft knife and those blades are literally scalpel sharp. I kept replacing the blades throughout the job and that tank was a joy to tear down.

If the blade edge on that shavehook is as sharp as a craft knife, and you can keep the sharp edge without it blunting, then that tool would be the answer to all hobbyists problems regarding tank resealing, it's perfect.

However, looking at it i don't think it'd be anywhere near as sharp as a craft knife blade, and the edge would soon blunt with stubborn silicon, and then, as mentioned, you start "pulling" at the silicon rather than cleanly slicing it.

Lol you should see the backyard...

In all actuality it's usually not that bad. I'm in the process of stripping out all that cabinetry and putting some racks in to organize all the tanks and extra glass. But thanks for the motivation to get crackin on it lol.
