If the total weight indeed won't exceed the weight of the tank for which the stand was designed, then you should be fine without reinforcement. However, I would go to a home improvement store and buy a thick board the size of your tank's footprint (they will cut it for you). Then simply put that on top of your stand and position the tank on top of it. The board will prevent stress on glass at the overhanging sides.

Agreed, you also might want to consider that if the tank is wider than the base it will be less resistant to tipping than if on a wider base.
 
tank is primarily used as a medical tank.. but is currently housing 1 small clown loach, 2 black phantoms, 1 bristlenose and a extremely large and recupping black moor (maled by a cichlad). With that much weight, and only say 2 inches per side hanging over, wouldn't be too worried about tipping..more about breaking or cracking...but thanks all for the input!
