What temp fo you keep your tanks at?

My tanks sit at about 78-80. My qt tank stays right about 86-88

Temps will vary depending on what you're stocking though. I keep mostly sa/ca cichlids and if I go any higher than 80 aggression issues go through the roof. What are you stocking?

I currently have a talbot damsel, but I'll be picking up some clownfish, goby, peppermint shrimp...

I keep both my tanks in the mid 70's. Right around 75 degrees is what a shoot for.

Keeping your tank at a higher temperature like the low 80's will speed the metabolism of your fish. This means more feeding and faster growth. The bi-product of more feeding is more waste and more need to do water changes and general upkeep.

BTW don't keep any tanks, even a QT over 84. That is too hot for almost all saltwater fish and can have detrimental effects.

My 75g reef ran at about 75-76 at night, and gets up to 79 during the day with the halides....this is a little more swing than I would like to see, but keepin my temps under 80 was one of the first steps for me in keeping and growing coral successfully I believe.

mine is sitting at about 81-82... is this unsafe? i'll lower the temp on my heater tonight

Oops. This is true for salt. I'm freshwater and the elevated temps are beneficial in qt freshwater tank. Ich cycle lasts about 3-4 days at 86 or above in fresh. I agree salt needs lower temps.

intersting.. my heater was on, set to 79, but the tank was at 81.8...

That probably fluctuates based on the time of day. I would lower the heater to the mid 70's and if the lights and pumps raise the heat higher than that then so be it.

I would check the temperature in the morning before the lights are on and then again right when the lights go off. This will give you your temp. spread. If it is more than a couple degrees I would look into doing something about it. Like running a fan on the top of the tank while your lights are on so that the temp. doesn't get so high and cause fluctuations. Just remember that the fan will cause more evaporation.

Go to petco and buy yourself a small digital thermometer. I use this to keep a constant eye on my reefs temp. Another option would be to buy a reef controller. They are only about $100 for a simple one that could run temp and a couple other things.

Once again, this wont really be an issue for most things. But once you get into some of the more high end sps and other demanding corals...temp can make a difference in my opinion.
