the compressive strength of a brick wall is huge... meaning the amount of downward force it can hold...
So if the wall is in good shape, and is properly sitting on a solid foudation... and the ceiling/floor joists are in good shape sitting squarely on the top of the brick wall...
This should support a fairly huge tank. I don't think I would put a 8' x 4' tank up there... but it sounds like you would be safe to go a lot bigger than a 55 gal...
