Tank Wallpaper

I dare to differ in opinion on this :) Fish do care about tank background.. You'll find that when you change the color or add background that they get more stressed or more homely.. I had silver then Blue metalic with my dempseys... And the were shy and timid Even more than when there were no background... SO i added the Romance color :) Red transparent wrapping paper :) HHHmmm the are so much better now.. Their color comes out better and they are ten times less stressed looking..

Background does matter when it comes down to fish feeling more secure in their surroundings. This doesn't mean you can't get them to be comfortable without it.. I am just giving my experience in this area.. And the experience of a couple others that i gathered their similar experience:)

Breeding tends to be easier when you give darker backgrounds that make the fish feel more scure in the territory that they have established.. Once again my opinion from my experience:)

Now my SA's in the 150 only care about one thing now!! ANd that is what is unlucky enough to fall in the tank next !!

Which my africans still hide since there is no back ground... But they loved the metalic blue which is destroyed now.. :)

to me, the background helps a fish's color. for example, if you have dats with black background, when they are resting close to the back, they will turn black to blend into the background.

this topic is always debatable, such as substrate is required and bare bottom tank is streeful to fishes. i say instead of asking, just go out, spend $10 at a LFS for some background (one side is blue, other side is black) and give it a try to see yourself. all fishes are different.

Backgrounds help keep timid fish less stressed. Especially if the tank is covered on three sides, leaving the front open. Its a proven fact.

Sure, some fish dont care. But others seem to do much better with a background of some sort.

And for me, its just personal preference, but a bare backed tank where you can see all the plumbing and wires, just looks ghetto. thats just my opinion.

Plastic wrapping paper is much cheaper:)

Look at this then! I found this it might be interesting to you:

In salmonid fish, a darker skin colour has been suggested to signal social subordination. Substratum colour is another factor affecting skin pigmentation in fish; in the present experiment, juvenile Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) were acclimated and allowed to interact in pairs for 5 days on a pale or dark background colour. Skin darkness was quantified prior to and following social interaction. Furthermore, agonistic behaviour and skin darkness were quantified, together with plasma levels of cortisol, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and -melanocyte-stimulating hormone (-MSH), and brain levels of monoamines and monoamine metabolites. The results show that fish interacting on a white background were more aggressive than those interacting on a black background. Social subordination resulted in skin darkening in fish kept on a white background, but not in fish kept on a black background. Furthermore, subordinate fish on a white background showed an elevation of brain norepinephric activity, an effect not seen in subordinate fish on a black background. Subordinate fish on both white and black backgrounds showed a similar activation of the brain serotonergic system and the hypothalamic—pituitary—interrenal axis. These results support the suggestion that skin darkening in subordinates acts as a social signal announcing social submission.

As my old school teacher used to say “Back to you”
