Yes, this is horribly simple but I would really like to know.

What water do you use to refill your tank with?

I buy gallons of spring water and do 70-80% change.

Is there any way I can use tap water? Im fairly sure its dangerous to the fish what with all the chlorine and chemicals in it.

buy a declhorinater from your LFS. Just ask they'll show u what u need... Everyone here will tell u to use prime. i agree, but since i cant find it at any of my LFS i use Stress coat+ . it removes chlorine and cloramines and ammonia.

oh wow. i think i already have one of those....

"Aquarium water conditioner, reduces stress, removes chlorine, stimulates natural slime coat" ?

If thats right, then do I add it before or after I put the fish in the water. Common sense tells me before.

I put it in after. No sense putting it in before you put in the water. And my fish can handle 5% chlorine water in 1/3 of the tank water for 5 minutes while filling it up anyway.

well you should never "put the fish in the water" you should add the water to the fish tank with the fish in it.

You can always just leave your tap water sitting out over night to remove chlorine. Assuming its other levels are ok.

I personally have moved to using an RO unit to filter my well water so I can use it safely.

I wouldn't do the leaving it overnight method unless you're sure you have chlorine and not chloramine. Also you should add prime if you're using stress coat with chloramines as it does not get rid of the ammonia.

The water treatment should be added to the new water before you add it to the tank because if you add it after you`ll need to treat the whole volume of the tank and not just the amount of water that has been replaced. Also in the warmer seasons a lot of water companys will use chloramines aswell as chlorine due to bacteria being able to thrive more in a warm enviroment than it can in a cold enviroment and the chloramines are stronger than chlorine and is used for this reason. Also the chloramine will not dissipate when left out over night like the chlorine does. So yes you can use tap water but make sure it`s treated first with tap safe or equivalent treatment.....

i use prime because it treats more gallons per bottle. whatever you get make sure its treats cholrine and chloramine. and i treat the water BEFORE it goes in the tank, just to be on the safe side

Or do as i do and get pond treatment which will do 100G uk with just 5ml. And it`s about the same price for the same size bottle of which one lasts say a month and the other will last 6.
