woah dude you cleaned and scrubbed out your filters and gravel with tapwater? and your threw your fish back in there? um yeah thats the worst possible thing you could do. youre gonna go through a full blown cycle, not a mini-cycle. aint you might lose some of your fish when your ammonia starts to peak and there's no BB to consume it!!!

good luck

Wait what?

Are you freaking kidding me?

I only have one fish so that should lessen the impact of ammonia on the tank shouldn't it?

Good god i feel like crap now.

Every time Ive cleaned his tank, thats what I've done, but I'm guessing that its a shock to his system when the BB isn't there.
My filter is a biological one as well.

Hopefully it'll work out.

Anything i can do to reverse what I've done even a little bit?

Get some good media from a different filter

you still got any of the dirty water? Silly q i know but if you have bung it in as near to the filter intake as possible. And if you always do it like this and the fish hasn`t died your lucky. But if it`s an oscar you`ve got then it won`t be long before you meet Mr HITH...

unfortunately im not kidding. by scrubbing out your bio media and using tap water, you pretty much wiped out your whole population of BB and its like starting over everytime. bio media should seldomly need cleaning, and when it does, you should rinse it out in old tank water.

since you only have one fish, the ammonia levels will not rise as rapidly as if it were fully stocked. hopefully the bacteria can grow fast enought to cope with the ammonia levels as they rise and it wont harm your fish. do you have a test kit? start testing your water in a few days and keep an eye on the ammonia levels.

if they start to get too high, start doing water changes every other day to keep the ammonia at safe levels - until your filter re-establishes itself. once your ammonia and nitrites hit 0, you can start with your regular water changes. be sure to treat the water as you've been doing but definately dont clean your filters/gravel with tap water

and as far as reversing the effects, there really isnt much you can do unless you have a filter running from another tank. or maybe you could get some established bio media from a friends tank or from your local fish store

No, no old water, and no other filters in the house either... Only 1 tank.

Mr HITH?

im assuming thats not good.

HITH = hole in the head disease. do a search here on MFK and youll find lots of info

http://www.worldcichlids.com/diseases/Adamhith.html

Some pics of hith. If you get the signs of it try to get some metranidazol and soak your food in it before putting it in the tank and buy good food then do s**t loads of water changes. 1 a day that is.

And hope for the best. Oscas can suffer with it unfortunatly so this regime of yours won`t help atall. Just read up on it and choose what you think will be the best way to treat it for your tank. Different people treat it different ways.. Good luck mate :)

Thanks a lot guys.

Wont ever do this again.

Prepared for the worst.
