TANKED on Animal Planet

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i agree & disagree with many. to much to read all post (half read) Its not bad but not great and as far as helping the hobby? Not sure or don't think so. It may help their business out because of the exposure. There is a lot of talk about this show. I'm in the business & everyday someone is asking me if I seen the show even people that are not into fish but know that I'm into it. They need to start changing some of the show because it is getting repetitive & will get boring to many (us mainly). Most of anyone will not or can afford these setups they are doing on the show.
As far as cycling these tanks. They most likely are using a super bacteria and or combination of seeded media. I do wonder about all the fish & types put in these tanks. But as far as we know they removed half the fish out after the taping of the show. Its is for show.
And as far as coral in a African cichlid tank? I do it all the time with my business. I setup & maintain many tanks that look like salt water but are filled with really nice Africans & many do not know the difference. Some new customers or new to the hobby come into my show room & asked if I only sell salt fish!? I do not have any salt or marine tanks. lol.
Here's something more inline for you guys that you may like up coming show & maybe gets on real tv someday? Frank did a couple shows on my place.
enjoy

My thoughts on the show are very mixed. I enjoy watching it at times, some of the tank designs they do are very interesting and awesome but I do wish there was a bit more fact in the show. I used to watch animal planet all the time when I was younger and loved the shows like The Crocodile Hunter and Jeff Corwin because they kept it interesting but told you a bit about the animal. I feel the show could benefit from something like that. I understand that for the sake of TV they can't go through the entire cycling process and such but a little time spent on fun facts about the fish or the things needed to run some of the monster tanks they create would be better spent then the wife complaining about this and that. I have mixed feelings about the show but don't have major complaints.

They seem to mostly deal with that one place,Exotic Reef Imports for their livestock as theyv'e shown the place a few on the show...I remember seeing advertisements for ERI in different aquarium magazines.

I understand that the floating cross fiasco was just for drama, I still think it made them appear like bumbling fools.

The construction of the cross was the part that really disappointed me. Using waferboard for the base is ridiculous - I wonder if the cross is only temporary? This kind of product is full of formaldehyde and antimicrobial agents, definitely not something you should be putting in an aquarium, even for a short time.

The way they seal it, the inside will never see water. I use a lot of 'interesting' frames making artificial inserts that wouldn't be 'fish safe' if they weren't coated properly. It's all about the right epoxy coating.

yea, saltwater is nice, but ive always been attracted to freshwater more. i dont know why, just like it better.

They did spackle it with an epoxy coating, but then proceeded to drill dozens of holes in it for the coral inserts. If even one hole isn't sealed properly or if the coating cracks the pressboard will be exposed to water and will quickly deteriorate. I just have to wonder why they would choose pressboard as a substrate when there are much, much better options available.

I think its a great show, there isnt much on our hobby that makes it to the main stream media outlets. I bet all the local fish stores are starting to see a lil boost of buisness from the show. As far the tank cycling and the sealing of the inserts doesnt make great entertaining TV, that indepth info would be better suited into a documentry. Just my opinnion
