I had mine with a female Hoplo cat since I introduced him to the tank and they lived peacefully for months. When he was about six inches I decided to try to add a male Hoplo catfish, as well as additional rocks for hiding spaces for everyone. The male jack killed both of them shortly after, ripped their tails off and their armored scales where damaged. They can be placid, but they are tricky about what they decide are their territory and can become brutes any moment. This is just my experience though, he grew more aggressive as he matured. Interesting fish!Anything pretty much but if you dont want alot of fighting i would go with a severum. Pikes are very aggressive, a couple bichirs would be a nice addition too. Another option you mentions would be a school of silver dollars
Have a Jack Dempsey in a 90 gallon, trying to think of tank mates. Was originally wanting to go for a peaceful community tank but think I am going to stick with the Jack and try and see if I can still have a cool assortment of fish. Some cichlids are okay, but I would like some ideas other than cichlids too.
Some of the things I am thinking of (keep in mind, I am not saying all of these in the same tank) are Angels, Severums, a Bichir, Pike Cichlid, Green Terror, maybe Silver Dollars, Pictus Cat, ect.
Thinking maybe some schooling fish that the Jack wouldn't eat? He seems pretty laid back...what fish do you all have experience succesfully keeping Jacks with?
Im not good as such advice at minute as I have 2blue acara 2 jack dempsey and 2 firemouth and a gold phantom pleco and gold nugget pleco in a 240litre tank external filter 306, they are juvinile I have the tank set up with plenty of hiding places so they can retreat as they get older, although I have firemouths they are central america as oppose to the other 2 that are south america but I can see the pecking order takinv place they are second in the order at moment, yes I know reputations of each fish excetra before other know it alls comments, cichlids are trial and error just be sure to have seperation tank available, very high aggression chichlids from the top of chain shluld be in a pair on thier own but you can get away with two pairs, if you turn the both ends of tank into breeding points with a lot of things to seperate the both sides into two parts etceteraor 3 like I am trialing nowHave a Jack Dempsey in a 90 gallon, trying to think of tank mates.
