Tankmates for JD in 65 gallon aquarium.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I say go with JD, sengal and convict. There always a chance of aggression toward any similar sized tankmates with JDs. To minimize the chance, pick your tankmates carefully.
If you want a JD you need to pick a tankmate that's preferably not another similar sized cichlid. Cichlids are more likely to be aggressive towards other cichlids. Bichers can be a good option. They are bottom dwellers and are pretty tough but usually not out-right aggressive. Sure the JD can stress him when he goes up for air but its not guaranteed. You want to start with all young fish. If they grow up together they are less likely to kill each other. Initially I would pick a bicher that is as large as i can get without him eating the JD. This will give him more a chance to establish himself with JD on the pecking order. The JD will also grow faster than the bicher and its nice if you start with a bicher that's larger than your cichlid. If the JD ends up stressing him to much than pick your favorite fish and get rid of the other. You wont really know for sure unless you try.
Convicts are fast, tough little guys. In my opinion they know how deal with bully tankmates and can lay a hit or two for themselves. Sometimes they are a little too aggressive though. I seen my 5 inch convict lay a few hits on my 12 inch endli. If anything I would leave out the convict unless you had a bigger tank. If you are dying for the convict I would first get the JD and sengal and let them establish themselves. If things are going well you can add the convict. If it disrupts the mojo in the tank get rid of the convict...he's like 4 bucks anyway. goodluck

I think a bichr would be a great idea. I think a convict is a great idea too. I think i will get them. Should i get a male or female convict?

I think you need to make up your mind to keep your fish healthy and responsibly before adding to your livestock.

Why do MFK members always say something is not gonna work when it works for other people just because it didn't work for you doesn't mean it won't work for other people.

Due to the jack dempesy's aggressive behavior even at a young age there is limited tank mates in a 65 gallon. I personally have a small jack dempesy that goes after my 7" clown knife so I would go with a bottom dweller. I also have a striped Raphael catfish and the don't bother each other. If i were you I wouldn't go with anything bigger tank 8" so that the jack dempesy doesn't feel threatened. You could go with
1: striped raphael catfish
2: spotted Raphael catfish
3: eclipse catfish
4: any species for Cory catfish
5: crayfish
6: African featherfin catfish
6: bristle nose pleco
7: rubber lip pleco
8: striped peacock eel ( get about 18" but if provided with decoration they will stay out of each others way)
Hope this helps.
