Hi guys, first post and first large aquarium fish i have purchased.
I have kept cichlids for yrs and resently stumbled across a 30cm mangrove Jack for sale and jumped at the opportunity.
I soon after purchased a 6x2.5x2.5 to house the champion in and i would like to now give him a tankmate/friend.
Any comments will be much appreciated and looking forward to learning a lot from you guys/girls

He will probably kill any tankmates, I believe you need to go brackish then full marine as he grows.
How big do they get... 4'?

Based on your pic, it doesn't look like he wants tankmates.
Get him a pet rock.
LOL! I have had a few jacks in the past and they were always increasingly aggressive as they grew in size.

I have slowly started to go brackish with the tank, a lot i have read states the fish will he much happier as it grows in brackish/salt water

Also the tank is about 800L.
Not sure about building a sump or simply buying a large canister filter, what do most ppl run on large aquariums?
Cheers guys

Hi mate, Great investment if you like giving live feeders like poddy mullet. Mine is 25cm and he killed a similar sized Festae but he's ok with an adult Oscar and 30cm Jaguar. From my experience they are better with large semi aggressive fish not highly aggressive like Festae, Dovii ect as Jack's never come off second best and those who challenge pay the price.

Mine lived in a 285 gallon with a tapajos pike, but the pike would hide a lot, I think she was afraid of the snapper. When he was smaller he played nice but as he got older he got a lot more aggressive. He also lived with a large motoro ray for some time after I had to sell him but idk if I would do that myself.

Lutjanus Argentimaculatus don't need full marine when they get larger LOL light brackish is fine just try and keep the water hard and pH up with marine rock/sand. Mine was only around 17-18 inches when I broke my tank down btws
