Tankmates for Puffer?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe some tetra's or fast and small if your willing to lose them. But species is best for puffers

as far as I have learned, tanks mates are a no-no.
Too much trial and error, more error, and more error.

What works out now may or may not work out in the future.

Excellent post, n8uregirl!

I had a baby guppy live with the puffer for awhile. The puffer knew it was there and never bothered it. The guppy got bigger too. And it seemed the Puffer accepted it cause the puffer never bothered to lunge at it even if it was right in front of it's face. But I eventually took the guppy out. Everything else I have put with the puffer has been destroyed. Including guppies, minnows, malaysian trumpet snails, danios, and white clouds.

I didn't mean to feed the puffer fish. These fish I moved to the tank more as an experiment because they were unwanted. I knew the possibility they'd be eaten/killed was high. I thought 4 big minnows that were fast were gonna survive awhile. Nope, the Puffer destroyed them all in 1 night.

I have done it several times, even had a tank with three different species of puffer in a single tank. I just do not recommend it. You could do something like a Platinum Half-Beak though.
Hi what kind of puffers did you have together and how many gals was the tank? Just wondering, probably not a good idea to try. But I have heard that figure 8's and GSP's get along well.

F8's and GSPs do not get along long term. F8's get the size of Kiwis, GSPs are grapefruits...who is going to run that tank?

Besides, the two fish need different water chemistry..
