Tankmates for Senegal Bichir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I've heard. I have the same problem with my plecos haha. Once I got my first it was a chain reaction. Someday I want a tank big enough to keep an adult common in.

Glad you mentioned the pleco's don't put in tank with polys , because plecos will want suck the slime off bichirs causing stress, and infections.

Yep definitely no plecos in there. Otherwise I'd already have a bichir in my pleco tank.

I have a planted tank with kind of large bichirs, and they don't uproot the bottom plants, maybe once a month or so when they get spooked.
As for tankmates, in the past I've had good luck with most cichlids (that don't get too large or aggressive), and even community fish!
Currently my 130 has 2 ten inch delhezi and a 5 inch senegalus.
Community fish are congo tetras, denison barbs, and cherry barbs.

The bichirs caught a few in the beginning but I haven't lost a fish in a while.
Lost about 3 cherries, 2 denison, and the congo are too fat to be eaten.

They'll prey on small fish that rest or sleep at the bottom...

Also a 50 is fine for a long time I'd say atleast 3 years depending how fast the specific individuals grow ...u could prob put 3 or 4 if ya wanted ... Had mine for 3 years only hit 8" albino hit 7"

If needed I can always upgrade the tank. I know everyone says they will but doesn't, but I plan on keeping my stock for their lives.
