Hello, I know I don't EVER post here, but I'm actually glad I registered now, because a friend and I are looking to set up a tank for a Silver Arowana and we're looking at suitable tankmates. We were considering:

Violet (Dragon) Goby
2 or 3 Reedfish (ropefish)
2 Plecos, one black, one albino.
Blood Parrots
Ghost Shrimp
Various school fish.
Blue lobster(?)
Tiger Oscar(?)
Catfish(?)

And we were looking at Aquarium catfish, as well as a Tiger Oscar if its aggressiveness is not an issue. We were looking at a gallonage of 150 for this setup. If anyone has any setup advice it would be much appreciated.

I did a bit of research. If a gallonage of 150 is too small, what gallonage do you guys think I should go with initially for this setup? Do you think I could keep max volume under 500G? Thanks guys.

With a good footprint, something in the 400 range could work... maybe. I've got one in a 400 gallon trough, with a diameter of 6.5', and when this aro starts nearing 4' it's gonna be a tight fit, so I'll have to upgrade. These are not fish to be be bought lightly.

Silver aros are big and bulky, so you want tank mates that are bulky enough, or tiny enough, not to be seen as meals. I can tell you from personal experience that even if a fish is too big for the aro to eat, it will probably still try anyways.

There are many different pleco species, so I'll just assume you mean Hypostomus plecostomus, which could work. Just remember, you need to take as good care of your loricariids as you do your arowana, meaning you need to supply them with their own veggies.

Honestly, I think a large silver aro swimming amongst a giant school of some tetra species, or maybe multiple species, would look pretty cool.

I think I'll start with guppies or minnows at first, to make sure the Aro wouldn't consider them food. Thanks for the advice though!

Also, would a Pacu make a suitable tankmate?

BICHIRS. best tankmates for arowanas. get the delhezis.

gar, I think they will get along just fine, and good for a monster tank! a tank with footprint about 8' X 3' and 20 inches high(300 Gallons) at least!

A Pacu would be Great if you are planning on a lets say 400Gallon. But I hvae my Silver in with The fish in my Signature thing so they are getting along fine so if you like any of my fish Buy um :D Heres the pics of my fish they will be going into a 360-370Gal soon. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=395980 Good luck :)
