Tankmates with JARDINI (READ!!!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have got a baby jardini. Its about 18 cms now, which is roughly 7 inches long.
So far after reading this thread, i went in search for a few tank mates.
So now its with 2 little flowerhorns, theyre about 8cms, which is about 3 inches.
And after reading about Dovii's on this forum and checking out Dovii's pics, i went and purchased 2 males and 1 female Dovii's. The males are about 11 cms, which is about 4.5 inches and the female is a little smaller.

The flowerhorns and Dovii's loves to fight for territory. 2 flowerhorns teamed up and took over the ship ornament. Theyre a couple by the looks of it. They won it from one of me dominant dovii.

However when they decide to snap at the jardini, they cower back down after the jardini bites them.

Me jardini doesnt look for trouble at the moment... its still too young. But when it gets picked on, i really like how he tenses his body and dances the war dance with the cichlids.

I am saving up $$$ to get a bigger tank, double the size of what i have now.

Hope all goes well before the jardini changes its attitude.

I will have To agree with you. In my experience with jardini arowanas I have come across mostly aggressive specimens that in the end have to be kept alone. I have delt with about 12 Jardinis in my fish keeping ventures and I have only seen 2 that co-exist with other fish. The rest were very aggressive towards tankmates and have killed dozens of fish. The that were ok with tankmates were raised with fish slightly larger then them when they were about 4" and both fish were raised to about 30"(these fish were kept on seperate occasions. I tried keeping the others with tankmates of all sorts and fish and had no luck, all they did was beat the crap out of their tankmates. So from my experience I'd have to say that jardinis are great fish but they aren't for everyone. If you going to attempt to keep this fish be aware that they can be very aggressive towards tankmates. My suggestion would be to keep them in a large tank with tankmates slightly larger than them. Thanks Steve_89 for starting this thread I think that the info your giving is very accurate and I aggree with your thoughts.
I was thinking about getting a jardini arowana to go along with my Silver arowana and jaguar chiclid. would it still show aggression to fish 3 to 4 times its size?

I currently have a 7' Jar in with a 10' silver and I will see the Jar snap at the silver from time to time. I guess this is normal bc after a snap or two the two will swim together back and forth normally.

Also in the tank is a 7' TSN, two 6' gars, and a 3' Indo dat

How’s it working still?

I'm thinking of putting a silver in around the same size of my jar they’ll be in a 405gal though, that or maybe another jar or lei.

The jar and silver didn't work. The snapping became nipping and i started to see the silvers fins become frayed so i moved my silver to another tank. gonna grow him out more then reintroduce later.

the jar is doing find with the others though. with a 405g, this may work. i have a 150g so there was only so much room.

give it a try and monitor their interaction. i've heard people keeping two jars together before and worked. i like the fact that you have a large tank to experiment.

btw, if you come across another lei between 7 to 10', drop a pm and let me know. been looking for one for awhile. thanks!

I have a fairly large Jardini in a large aussie community tank, he is 12"-14"

I grew one up before him that was trying to annihilate all his tank mates. I had to rehome him.

I tried again, and this one has been quite placid so far, he is kept inline by my cod who i've seen actually chase him trying to eat him.(I need to keep the cod well fed at all times and he's fine.

Check out the pics in my thread "My Aussie Native Tank"

i keep my jardini with two black aro's and a wild silver.
