Tankmates with JARDINI (READ!!!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right now, my jar is only about 5.5 inches. It is living with a 2" black skirt tetra, 3" blue gourami, 3" gold gourami, 5.5" senegal, 5.5" marbled goby. I haven't had any problem with any tankmates except my 6.5" tat. When I first put the tat in with it, the aro was afraid of it, but the last 2 times I tried removing the divider, the jar hit the tat and tried to kill it. It's probably because the tat is silver, but it hasn't killed the tetra, which has a lot of silver.

I had a jar a while back maybe 3 yrs ago... the jar was only like 12-13" with a clown knife that was 15" that jar dang near beat the knife to death... I felt sorry for that knife.

as far as i know, jars are the most aggressive among aros. correct me if im wrong. also i think it depends on whether the jar has already settled in the tank and mark his territory. whatever fish you put after the jar has settled down in the tank will mostly be killed. but if other fishes were in the tank before you put the jar, i dont think it'll kill them. depends. what do you think?

it will take longer, but the jar will eventually stake it's own territory and then...it's entirely up to the jar

My jardini is about 15 inches long now and lives with:

8 Clown Loaches
12" Fire Eel
8" Marbled Goby
2 Plecos

I've also kept a spotted raphael catfish, datnoids and an endlicheri endlicheri bichir with him with no trouble. Not sure if he even realised the bichir was alive.

What hasn't worked:
Red Bay Snook
Any Cichlid type (really anything that gets in the aro's way)
Active Catfish

My jardini is pretty mean also. He has drawn blood from biting my hand a few times already, his initial force on a hit is pretty insane. I bought indestructable heaters do to this, which he enjoys attacking at night for some reason (maybe the light on it). He seems not to mind bottom dwellers as long as they aren't a threat to his food supply. As long as I keep him fat he stays happy.

There's been tons of these threads though, with people arguing. Seems to me like a lot of people that say "omg jardinis will pwn anything, keep them solo lolz" are really only talking hypothetically and not from experience. Experienced jardini keepers will probably agree that it is going to be trial and error. You have to be able to remove a fish you introduce, have a back up tank ready or be on good terms with wherever you bought the new fish so you can return it if need be.
I would avoid anything that will make the jardini think he has competition, that's when they get nasty. As long as the arowana doesn't view them as a threat (like bottom dwellers usually) tankmates work just fine.

I had a 15" in jar with a 20" in silver and a 12" lima shovelnose, in a 150 and they seemed pretty peaceful, until i went on a trip for a couple of weeks and left my fish in the care of my family, both aros died.

I have an 8-9" jar with a silver, 3 monos, 2 Festea, a dat, an a few other cichlids in a 240 gallon. So far everything is good. Occasionally he will nip if another fish gets to close, but no real aggression yet. I hope it stays that way until I upgrade to 1000 gallons or so.

Jars are well known for being fine for years and years and flipping out simply over night. Its not a guarantee but the odds of it happening are much more than the odds of it working out.

8 times out of 10 if someone has a story about a jar that never gave its tank mates problems the whole time it was kept its usually because the jar died or was traded before it had a chance to snap.

Its not a for sure thing it will happen but then again its not a for sure thing that a person is going to die if their airplane crashes and they don't have a chute.....its extremely likely though.;)

for what its worth I personally believe your jar chased your lei out of the tank one night while having a psychotic episode...couldve even just been in a bad mood, Ive seen it happen many times and then the jar go back to acting like a perfect angel.
