Tankmates with JARDINI (READ!!!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so i guess at night the silver and the jar was fighting nothin too bad some fins split one or two scales gone nothing dead yet.. "phew"

Hey, everyone new to the boards here. Well I currently have a 10 in jardini that has pwned everything in the tank with him. After reading some of the earlier post I have to come to a conclusion that I got the mean as hell bastard type lol. He has killed several gg 2 almost 3 times his size. Craziest thing in the world, now he lives by himself. Wondering has anyone tried keeping a group of jardinis with any success?

I had a 12" jar living with a 12" silver and some small 2" mobas and 2" royal/pepermint plecos. Had them in the tank since I bought em, no dead fish.. I think the silver kept em in check, or because I never fed em live food, or just lucky I guess lol. Sad to say I sold my tame Jar to make room for my black aro. Here's a picture of the two aro.

My jar ate my beloved senegal bichir... i was heart broken...

the bichir was 1 day away from being moved to his new bichir tank. My jar decided to have him for dinner during the night... I love my jar but...still... :(

Yea...it's still in a community tank with 2 other super fat bloody parrots, he never bothered them. Actually he's scared of the parrots...lol...

The bichir was the nicest guy in the tank...I guess you can bully the bully you're safe.

I would suggest the first sign of agreesion towards an individual in the tank remove the victim immdietly!

Some informations:
180g tank
sand substrate
5 pots of barteri and 2 pots of onion plants
2 bloody parrots 4.5" ea (but super fat...like a softball) King and Queen of the tank
13" Jardini

Ok so this question is asked frequently on MFK. I will try and answer it. This is what I beleive, feel free to add what you like and what you have experienced with keeping these guys with tankmates.

DO NOT DERAIL

Jardini have the reputation of being the bad guys of the arowana world. They can be very nasty and a lot of us have discovered the hard way that these guys should either be kept alone or tankmates should be seleceted with care. I would advise you not to introduce a jardini into a tank with a fish you dearly love. You may wake up in the morning and find it dead...

If you insist on keeping a jardini with tankmates it comes down to a case of trial and error. It may or may not work. Its that simple...but at the same time a pain. Obviously you will not want to risk any unecessary deaths. Don't lose hope though, there are cases where jardini have succesfully been kept in community tanks. The only thing you might lose is a lot of money and a lot of fish on the way to finding a combination that finally works. But im sure the feeling of accomplishment will be great ;)

Jardini also have a reputation to suddenly become aggressive after they hit the 8 inch mark. This has been found out by a lot of hobbyists so do not be fooled into thinking your Jardini is one of the tankmate tolerant ones. You may find out that suddenly your Jardini has gone on a killing spree. It has happened before…

A few tankmates I would suggest are the giant gourami, peacock bass and clown knives. A few people I know have had this combination work for them. Basically just try to keep tankmates of a bigger size than the Jardini.

Another commonly asked question is if leichardti will tolerate tankmates. This is hard to answer. Once again a case of trial and error. I have had leichardti beat up 12 inch + fish. In my experience they can be just as nasty. I have seen them in large community tanks though so who knows.

Any other questions regarding the keeping of jardini and tankmates?

Feel free to ask.

Steve

Thank you Steve for the detailed information.
My Jardini have just hit 8" and started showing his aggression to its lone tankmate 14" Oscar.
This was a scene 2 months back when little Jar used to run for its life whenever the BIG PUPPY used to scare him to death.

Things seems to have changed now as I frequently see some Jaw Threatening by both. Last week I noticed O was really calm with its tail & fins been ripped off and some blood at the root of its Pectoral Fins. I gave him some Rock Salt bath & did some heavy water change to the tank. After that, O seem to have recovered from the shock & became aggressive again to Jar. They also seemed to have exchanged their favorite places (left/right) in the tank. What I see now, Jar is swimming towards O & turning back when close to Os mouth. I'm aware that its like sitting on a ticking timebomb which may explode anytime. So for the moment, keeping my fingers crossed.

Well, after the two paimas have been moved outside i expected jar to rule the tank ...hmmm not quite, silver took over and was chasing jar around the tank. I notice that they always swim together at the bottom/mid potion of tank and circling each other then i noticed slightly nippped fins on the jar while silver is completely pristine. I have moved in more silvers (along with the green) to curb the other silver (Very lean and no DE). the bigger silvers are fat and starting to show DE.

Hopefully it works out. I have no place to put the jar if silvers gang-up on him ... he starting to look really pretty with color splashes and all that ...it would be a shame if he is killed ... worse case, he kills other silvers!!!

I attach pix with silver circling jar (notice the nipped tail on jar)

Hi all,
New to the forums!

Been reading the threads and saw a subtle pattern...
Would you agree on personal experience that the more aggressive Jar's are the ones being fed feeders all the time?
And the peaceful ones eat pellets full-time?

Also, seems like if the tank is is overly big, the Jardini sees it as a thread and will attack it, or if it's too small, its an easy kill, but if it's generally the same size they in some cases it won't bother them.

Anyways, it'd be interesting to see a survey on whether your Jardini is agressive, and whether it has been fed pellets or live fish.

Thanks!

I have a Jardini and it is beating the crap out of my red tail gourami, gonna have to separate them soon but my Jardini does not dare to mess with my red tail catfish..
