Tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You have more than one BGK? They are not trying to take each other out? Impressive, what size?

no bgk yet but i do plan on having two.

for now i think ill just keep the two angels as the only chiclids in my tank.

I don't know anything about BGK but angels can mix with a wide range of other South American cichlids. I've kept angels in almost every tank I've had over the years with tankmates that include: severums, festivums, chocolate cichlids, keyhole cichlids, flag cichlids (Laetacara sp.), Uaru, discus, rams, Geophagus parnaibe... they do well with a lot of things.

My only suggestion would be to avoid the festivums. I've had three groups now and they're all aggressive. They dart at and attack other fish that get too close during feeding time. My angels have suffered split fins from this.

I second the rams!

P. ramirezi and P. altispinosa are both awesome looking and fun to observe little fish.

They aren't big enough to really do much damage to your plants (mine don't even touch them) And they are non-aggressive fish, except towards theire own kind.
They have a very small territory when they have fry, and won't bother anyone unless bothered.

They are sensitive to nitrates though, and require good care (more so than other cichlids, except maybe the EBJD)

<- picture in my avatar is of a P. Ramirezi male

I'd worry about rams and apistos cuz once the bgk got big (12"+) it might think of them as food. I'd try some of the smaller geos (redheads, pindare, taeniopareus), also I dont see why severums or satanoperca leucosticta/jurupari wouldnt work.

clown loaches , keyholes are a good choice... German blue rams, gold rams.. aspistos grammas...

Just what i was going to say , Plus Corys and other some Catfish like Twig Catfish , Dora Catfish Ect would work well too and other Loaches too .

Your getting some good suggestions as far as cichlids are concerned so let me help with the BGK. You may not have two for long if try and keep them in the same tank. They are very intolerant of their own species, especially as they start putting some size on them. Have a looksy in the knifefish subforum and you'll see what I mean. If you do try two, have a backup plan that includes a separate tank.

if you can get severums to work with your plants then i think they would be the best bet but severums really LOVE plants (and not in the way you would like lol) so they would either have to be super tough or grow really quickly, any of the smaller cichlids suggested like the rams and apistos are awesome little fish but will quickly dissapear at night when your bgk gets bigger

and +1 on what JK47 said about the knives, check out the forum here as well and you will get some good advice :)
