tanks are measured by the outside glass dimension. measure the inside dimensions, thats how much water it will hold, and yes it makes a huge difference.

for example a 180 really holds about 150g

RIP to your avatar. wow... thats a HUGE difference.

so when i go to buy my 125, should i look for a real 125? (160 or so??) or the fake one advertised as a 125?

easy, don't buy a tank for the volume. Make your choice to buy it based on the dimensions.

i always value length and width over height. hence my other thread about breakpoints. im tired of the missleading numbers!!

i could only imagine on craigslist somebody says they got a 300 gal for sale without listing dimensions, and the guy with a 10 gallon thinks "hmm. this will be perfect for my oscars when they grow too big!" so a month later he drives 100 miles to pick it up and he stands there speechless looking up at that glass pilar 40 feet high... what a waste of life whoever invented that...

yes, length and width are important for housing the fish. IMO though to have a truely impressive tank you need height. May be why I spend 700 bucks just to get the extra 6" height on my 450g.

i only see 1 advantage to height.

if i had a 1000 gal that was 6' high id fill it half way and put branches in the mid-top suspended in air. the height will make sure aros can jump all they want without leaving the tank or whacking their heads and it will also be super cool if i put bugs on those branches to watch the aro's natural behavior.

they measure the tanks by the trims on the tops.
I just emptied a 10 gallon tank with a 5 gallon bucket. I used 3/4 of the bucket and more than half the 10 gallon was empty

How do you know the bucket is actually 5 gallons?

It's a Home Depot bucket, it says "5 Gallon Bucket" on it. Do you think they would lie? :grinno:

By the way, Retuks, why do you post the most useless bulletins? And so many haha

I mean the spaceballs tank and the pimple forums were funny ;)
