Just to show the result from my way of keeping my fish. As made known to alot, I leave my lights on 24/7 for my tanks. Lights I am using are the common house hold cool white FL (T8). Each tank have 3 tube of them over the tanks. My tanks are usually 2.5 footer in depth and width thus not the whole of my tank is properly lite up. Blind spots are at the back of the tank for I concentrated more on the front of the tank.

Some may say this will be stressful to the fish, but then again I obseve mine by their feeding behaviour and their activities rate. All are showing very active behaviour and they are always begging for food despite I have been feeding them everyday with lots of food.

So my statement is simple, you can do tanning but do it sensiblely and you will have a good looking fish and not to mention a healthy one.

Those are not fully developed red under white lights. If I were to switch the lights to pinkish one, they will look bloody red.

darn, i keep postponing tanning mine - i really should put up some lights since the last ones went bust ... long time ago =P interesting and encouraging result though mine is developing color even with minimal light in the black tank (but soooo slow though) gotta get around to adding lights

does white light tanning have any effect on BB?

PS: the gold one is developing color really nicely under natural sunlight in the outdoor tank though (fully crossed back now - though still rather think gold bands)

very nice now update XB :)

From my own expriement, yes. Also depending on the thickness of the glass above that is between the light to reaching the fish below.
