Yup, either carbon or purigen will deal with the tannis no problem... took out my purigen from my 200G and now the tannins are going crazy again... not that i mind them too much...

Purigen works great as a maintainer for them but carbon is better do get in under control then maintain with Purigen. IMO
 
Purigen isn't designed to remove discoloration. Carbon clears everything out of the water. I love seachems carbon because its spherical so it doesnt compact like most other carbons. Another good product for removing tannins is chemi pure elite again its carbon based but actually works for 3-6 months unlike the 30 days u can get from carbon (and yes it does last that long from personal experience).
 
Thanks a lot dzjr1188. Just did a 50% water change and added a bit of the carbon to one of the media trays and so far so good. Also could be because of the water change but will update in 2 days or so.
