Hey guys,

I'd like to know from you guys (especially the "experts"), if you think my tap water is good to use it "pure" for rays or if I'd need to use some kind of filtration like RO water? Is it good, maybe even "perfect" or is there something you think that is terrible?

I am not a water expert but....
I'm assuming this is treated water coming from the city? Looks ok to me for the most part. Conductivity is pretty good. If you convert that into TDS you are around 195 ppm. Which is not 2 bad for tap water. I would still run it through carbon and sediment blocks before aquarium use. Also some sort of dechlorination process as well. Should be a great water source after that...

I'm on chicagos city water and I'm fine heck for the last 7 years I don't even use prime. I started to use prime for my rays and then I forgot a few times haha

I know my water must be good because I bred many cichlids in these waters

I forgot to use prime once, then BOOM full blown herpes. JK, forgot to use prime once, lost my old 6-7" VATF

Yep, this is indeed the treated water I am getting. I'm very happy especially with the nirate. It's about 2-3ppm which is pretty much nothing and since I am running a 24/7 drip system (with an overflow for the "old" water ofc) and I change about 25-30% water per day and I am not overstocking, my nitrate is always around ~3-4ppm in my tank. Also have some plants (pothos) above the tank with the roots inside of the water and I guess that also sucks up the little amount of nitrate I have.

I have always used a carbon and sediment filter so far, but it really costs a lot because I run a **** ton of water through it every month and that's why I kinda want to get rid of it.

Unfortunately you gotta pay to be a player in the game. I have not found a way around filtering my own water... It's part of our hobby...

So you don't dechlorinate your water at all?

Well I do if I remember to do so lol but in the last 15 years doing water changes I never did one once until I got rays. But since I forgot to do it twice in a row I haven't bothered with prime.

I know sounds like wow must be nuts but what works for me might not work for everyone. Like I said I had no issues with my water quality and my fish blossom and get huge and breed constantly.

They must not use chlorine or cloramine in the treatment process, or all your fish would be dead. Chlorine will dissipate after 24 hrs with good aeration. Cloramine will not...
