Tap, well, or RO water???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm on a small community well, so that's what I use.

Tap, de-chlor, small amount of salt. In the summer the water comes out the tap 78F so no preheat required. Winter, tap from inside mixed to right temp.
I have thought about RO but seems overkill for fish that are hardy. Maybe delicate fish like discus.

RO is not what is found in nature for most fish. They have evolved in natural waters which can be full or minerals, or at least partially saturated with natural minerals. If you have killies that live in temporary puddles of pure rain water, RO might work, but for most fish RO creates an environment devoid of things they need to regulate life functions such as osmotic stabilty and if used, are lost to the artificially sterile environment RO water creates and they are forced to endure.

This thread is making me re-think how I am going to set up an auto water changer. I've always wondered how people dechlor their tap water with an AWC, but a lot of them use RO to do this on their water feed. So would it be best to use tap with an AWC and just dump in a chemical dechlor every once and a while, split the feed water to run 50% RO 50% tap and use no dechlor?

Browse the DIY forum threads for water auto-change & drip systems, there are different methods covering various approaches to it.
however, no Directory where women can find pros to do it ;-)

RO with Seachems Equilibrium and Seachems Alkaline buffer. Local water has nitrate and at random times astronomical Phosphate levels. It's more to do with you local water quality and consistency than the fish you keep.

Just moved to Houston from NH, anyone have any experience with the water quality? How significant of an issue is it for Central Americans ie Parachromis?

Thanks!
