I believe it is the alpha, compare the smallest of the group to the alpha behind.

Very interesting. Do you believe my line of thought is correct? The most dominant is alpha and male. The uncertainty arises with smaller fish, since we can't tell if they're juvie females or subdominant males at this size.

I agree wholeheartedly, I've also seen it in Paratilapia where what I thought was female, exhibited male traits almost overnight when the alpha died or was removed. One almost doubled in size in a matter of days, but when the alpha was around it seemed to masquerade and pretend to be female.
