Target fish ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are 5” and that’s being generous. It’s dim lighting on one side and floating plants on the other with tons of caves on bottom. They are active only when they think I’m gone I have to sit a chair off to the side and sit there for a while before they will come out. I have observed how fast they are like lightning bolts and I can imagine they would make short work of target fish. I am after getting them comfortable around me and with the success I have had with other Cichlids and giant danios I wondered if there was something that would work with them. The reason I asked is like I said I’ve seen how fast they are, much quicker than the other Cichlids I have kept these are the first parachromis I’ve kept.

I will man up and take the lick on this one that was bad advice on my behalf.

I’ve seen this pair in a few videos and the male imo is the nicest I’ve seen and in the videos it appears they are in a 75 gallon tank and seem to be fine. I understand bigger is better but if the pair I have coexist in the 90 I will keep them there if I have to size up I will but I am going to try to keep them in the 90 for life.

If they are compatible, a 90 might work, but its not "so" much the gallons, as the footprint that matters. Line of sight breaks where the female can remain periodically out of view from the male are important, and a typical 90 really doesnt have that much area.
In a 6ft tank (better 8), I might say Tilapia of some sort could work, because they are fast, and also cichlids.
Parachromis often need another cichlid to arouse the protection response for the male to guard female and fry. My motaguense, and other cichlids often just thought of dithers as a meal, but not threatening enough to help cement the pair bond.

Other cichlids (like Tilapia) brought out a protective aspect, but the tank had to have enough space, to allow target species to escape beyond the immediate area.

I’ve seen how quick they can be I imagine a adult male will make short work of a 4ft burst across the tank. The extra height I figure might help when they fly up for food. My plan is to try the 90 with hides only female can fit in. I’ve contiplated convicts for the purpose your tiliapia fill. I’ve got time to see what is going to work for them. Just thought a target fish would be helpful for now.

If we are confessing then I am a hypocrit. While I know you have to be patient, I still expect my juvis to be 15 inch glass bangers within a week of purchase.
