Both Atlantic and Pacific get very large and can live in both fresh or salt water ..... the Atlantic max size is larger, but both fish can get 5+ feet, so unless you plan on a monster set up I'd stay away from tarpon .... they are a gentle giant, however, safe for tank mates as long as they can't fit into his mouth

exoticfishguy has some Atlantics and possibly some Indopacs. He has a thread about his two foot GATF in Other Characins and in that thread you can see several that are probably 18" long.

Wow! That is really bada$$. I did not realize anyone had them in a private collection.
 
In some states they're illegal to harvest from the wild. I've not seen any laws against having them in an aquarium if they're legally captured however. I'm getting some soon and I intend to keep paperwork on them as proof that I acquired them legally.

that was my only guess, illegal to collect your own without a permit
