tat dead at 10"

Well last night, i lost my 10" tatulia. About a week ago out of the blue he started bashing his nose real bad, he jumped on to the glass rim on my tank where the light sits. Which is below my lids, and they were closed. I thought i was dreaming as i heard him flopping around. I woke up finally, and put him in the tank. THe next morning i realized he was not doing so well, cloudy eyes swimming upsidedown etc.. I tried raising the temp adding salt, but did not make it. He was a great eater, ate nightcrawlers, shrimp, smelt.

Any idea what would cause him to freak out and start bashing his nose like this?

tank is a 4x2x2.5, only tankmates are rays. Clean water, only thing is different is i added a bubbler about a week or so ago.

hystrix, 2 @ 4.5-5" 1 @ 7" or so. they do not seem to eat fish much. Not even smelt.

U got that right

Mine started a freak out frenzy about 2 month ago. It acted extremely skittish like never before. I would come down the stairwell into the basement 15' from the tank and it would start jaw flapping and bashing the glass. Every water change would end with the TAT laying on the bottom breathing as fast as it could, looking like it was about to die at any moment. And then it stopped eating.

Out of panic I treated the tank for fungus and parasites for a week long treatment. And all has been good for 3 weeks now. No bashing or skittishness.

I am unsure if it actually had a parasite because I treat my live eater tanks for parasites twice yearly any way. But i guess I could have forgotten to treat the feeders or just had a really bad batch.

Might be something to think about for anyone having these problems with there tat's.

I do know that payaras in general are quite prone to getting scared when rays climb the tank. Quite a few losses lately, sorry to hear...

parasites is a plausible theory but why are the incidents seemingly isolated to this size of fish? what are the symptoms and name of this parasite?
